Abia Rising – prayer burden for Abia state, Nigeria
In 1991 when Abia state was created, it was originally conceived from an abbreviation of the state’s more densely populated four regions, Aba, Bende, Isuikwuato and Afikpo. However, barely five years later, in 1996, Afikpo was drafted into the newly created Ebonyi state. To my mind, this means that in God’s wisdom, the name, Abia, has a much more deeper significance than any human mind could have imagined at that time and it is definitely more strategic than anyone thinks or understands; especially when we take into cognisance the fact that Abia actually means MY FATHER IS JAH (JEHOVAH) or JEHOVAH IS (MY) FATHER. In other words, what was thought to be a superficial socio-political contraption directly translates into a special covenant relationship between God and a peculiar people. Specifically, It is indicative that the people of Abia have accepted Jehovah as their God and Father, and the territory of Abia state is completely under Jehovah’s lordship. This is not just ordinary, it is a covenant!
Hence, from this seeming historical co-incidence to the moniker, “God’s own state” attributed to the state at it’s inception, it is evident that Abia state has a place in God’s agenda. We have a covenant heritage with potential to become a pedestal for social justice and socio-economic greatness. This foundation also has the capacity to make our state a standard bearer and a beacon of hope in Nigeria; and here lies our challenge and burden as a people. To wit, how do we set the standards of justice and equity, social and economic prosperity as a people? How do we truly become a synosure of hope to other states in Nigeria? More importantly, how do we contribute to actualise our corporate covenant identity as a people?
We must all get involved.
Getting involved cuts across several interrelated strata. First, as a people we must admit that something is wrong and refuse to accept the current socio-political norm in our state as God’s will for us and as our defining identity as a people. Second, we must become proactive with, and committed to the electoral process in our state with the aim of contributing to the election of a better crop of leaders in our state. Finally, with the realisation that we cannot prevail by human strength and wisdom alone, we must lean on God and draw strength in the place of prayer as we seek His face.
This, therefore, is a call to pray. We invite God’s children who share in this burden, everyone who yearns for a better state and better corporate leadership in Abia to join us in the place of prayer and intercession.
